Roots

Scott and I went to see the legendary experimental theater ensemble The Wooster Group perform North Atlantic at REDCAT on Thursday night. It’s an incredible piece that fractures the visual space, the social dynamics, the sound and the dialogue on the stage. Then it shuffles the pieces and puts them back together in various configurations, creating gorgeous, grisly, hilarious moments.

I worked as an intern for The Wooster Group when I was a wee lass, still thinking I had a fabulous theater career in my future. I got emotional looking at the stage before the show started- the hovering quiet, the sense of expectation. It brought to mind a time when in some ways I was pretty miserable and lost, but in others I was wildly inspired and being transformed by a new experience of art. I like to think I’m still open to transformation at any moment, but The Wooster Group changed my life in a way that only happens when you’re seventeen and on fire.

If you’ve never seen them, go. They’ll shake your brain.
